Cart Designs *
I designed the trash, recycling and composting carts for the City of Austin residents. The carts are are available for use starting Fall 2017. I worked with the curbside collections team leader, Toter, the trash cart company, the Austin Resource Recovery marketing director, manager and project manager. The process began with a kickoff meeting, research on other cities, working in iteration, presentations and multiple check-in meetings before designs were finalized.
Stakeholders: Austin Resource Recovery, City of Austin.
Goal: New labeling for the cities' carts were needed since the older carts were not clearly identified. The old cart designs were not inline with Austin Resource Recovery's branding. Also, the city is expanding composting as an option for its residents and a consistent and clear system of design was needed to differentiate the carts.
The population is diverse and full color photos were added on the labels to let residents know what should go into their recycling and composting carts without having to read a lot of copy. English and Spanish are used on the lids of carts in order to communicate with as many residents in Austin as possible.
A few of the design objectives:
consistency in the placement of information across carts types and sizes
clear and large labeling on top of lids and side for easy and quick identification of cart type
remove unnecessary information
show, not tell information, where possible
ex: <- cart 5ft ->
large photos on in-mold labels on the lid
cost reduction
trash carts will not have a full color in-mold label on the lid, reducing cost by $1.75 per trash cart
Tools: Photoshop and Illustrator.
Timeframe: Two months.
Door Hangers
Stakeholders: Austin Resource Recovery, City of Austin.
Goal: These are door hangers I designed for Austin residents that are used when bulk/brush/yard trimmings cannot be picked up at the curb of their homes. The content and design required updates. Information has to be written in English and Spanish so that drivers can communicate with most Austin residents. The project began with a kickoff with the stakeholders - truck drivers who will be using these hangers while collecting bulk, brush or yard trimmings. The project manager and I also collected all of the previous versions of these door hangers for reference.
Tools: Illustrator.
Timeframe: Two weeks.
PrintedKUT Digital Ads
Stakeholders: Austin Resource Recovery, City of Austin.
Goal: Redesign web banners for KUT website to increase recycling at apartments in Austin. The ads have to adhere to Austin Resource Recovery's brand guidelines. Also, there are file size restrictions for a fast page load speed. I worked with the marketing team at the City of Austin to decrease the amount of copy of the original ads so that messaging is clear. The call to action is also easier to identify after the redesign.
Tools: Photoshop and Illustrator.
Timeframe: Three business days.
